Can Red Clover be used in treating cancer?

on 16 More in Cancer

It is said that red clover extract can act in such a manner as to inhibit estrogen, but also raise the production and increase of ER positive breast cancer cells.

What is confusing about this herbal medicine is the fact that it can do some good and also some bad things for the person using it on treating their cancer.  It appears the result depends on the situation as this herb might  either advance or stop cancer.

An isoflavone present in red clover known as biochina a is thought to protect the body from progressing breast cancer.  However, no one has proven this as there still have to be more studies done in evaluating and in determining whether or not this information is true.

In contrast to the paragraph above, it has been shown that when it comes to prostate cancer, red clover actually prevented the growth and development of normal prostate cells, and took things a step further by rising the struggle of cancerous prostate cells to high dose radiation.

It is as confusing as some patients with prostate cancer, will have to stay away from using red clover.

In favor of red clover, there is a theory that isoflavones defend against breast cancer, as with biochina a, but there is still the risk that the herb could cause  adverse effect on breast tissue, which leads to the development of this type of cancer.

In at least one study, suggestions are that the consequences of red clover’s isoflavone supplement did not add to mammography breast density, compared to other studies in which it has shown that hormone substitute therapy is good for increasing mammography breast density.

Let’s clear this up: mammographic breast thickness has been tied to the danger of breast cancer. Other evidence proves that breast density escalates when a woman has hormone replacement therapy (hrt) and will then decrease when such therapy is halted.

Also, for their own protection, women with a history of breast cancer, which also includes those who have suffered from major breast surgery, should not take it.

The warnings that HRT is tied into a greater peril for breast cancer and also adds to mammography breast density.

Soy and phytoestrogens have been suggested as potential natural alternatives to HRT, but no study has proven it yet.

However, it is worth emphasizing that there is still a strong probability that red clover and breast cancer are connected together.

It is usually suggested that patients who has hormone-sensitive cancers should not take red clover because there is a risk that it might raise estrogen levels. These include estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Patients experiencing estrogen-sensitive diseases should avoid the herb too.  Perhaps the safest way to treat cancer is to play it safe until further studies have been conducted.
